Sodium carbonate Soda Solvay® — soda ash for industry

Soda Solvay® soda ash: what is this product?

Soda ash, or sodium carbonate Na₂CO₃, is an alkaline inorganic compound widely used as an industrial raw material. CAS registration number — 497-19-8, HS code — 283 620. Due to its properties, sodium carbonate can act as a flux, regulate pH and in certain technological processes replace caustic soda.

One of the key applications of Soda Solvay® in the glass industry is its use as a raw material and fluxing agent. Sodium carbonate helps to lower the melting point of silica, which, accordingly, contributes to reducing energy consumption during glass production.

Sodium carbonate for various industries

The scope of Soda Solvay® is much wider than glass production. In the production of detergents, soda ash provides an alkaline environment, helps remove fats due to the saponification effect and is used to soften water.

In the chemical industry, sodium carbonate Na₂CO₃ is used to increase pH and is milder than caustic soda. In metallurgical processes, the product is used for desulfurization of cast iron, as a flux in mineral extraction, and in the production of lithium carbonate. In the pulp and paper industry, sodium carbonate can be used as an alternative to caustic soda in certain processes.

Solvay® Soda Dense and Light

The dense grade Soda Soda Soda Soda Dense has granular characteristics, which results in less dust and reduces the risk of product delamination during transportation and processing. This is the grade that Solvay recommends primarily for glass production.

Soda Soda Soda Light has a lower bulk density and a smaller particle size and is well suited for detergent production and chemical process applications.

For the pharmaceutical industry, Solvay separately offers Sodium Carbonate IPH - anhydrous sodium carbonate of high purity, which can be used as an active pharmaceutical ingredient, in particular in the production of effervescent tablets.
